Deadheart Behind The Scenes Vid is now live!

The Behind The Scenes Vid….

Last Sunday Katarina Mandic (one of my closest friends and now a member of the Seraphic Films team), myself and the Facebook account for Deadheart character, ‘Roama Walker’, individually emailed every single one of our Facebook fans with a private link to the Behind The Scenes video, shot and edited by one of my OLDEST friends, David Vallencia Stanley.

The catch was, LIKE our page before midnight Sunday and get a private YouTube link in your Inbox by Monday morn.

We ran into some walls. For example, not being able to send it to people with their privacy settings so high there was no ‘message’ tab to contact them. We also got in trouble from Facebook – y’know, the whole “you are spamming” thing but COME ON FACEBOOK, how are we suppose to message all our supporters when there is no longer a message group feature. I got a warning and promptly set up the Roama Walker account and Kat didn’t get a warning but found she couldn’t access her account for 2 days….eek.

The Vid was uploaded to my YouTube account – KristyBestOnline and we made sure to put a subscribe link to the Deadheart Youtube – DEADHEARTtheSERIES. The account doesn’t have any videos on it at the moment,,,But it will….Be patient 🙂

So, why only send out a private link to those that have liked our page?

Well, because, they were nice enough to and deserve to see what’s happening before everyone else, merely for taking the time out and pressing that ‘like’ button!

I also wanted to do my own little experiment. For those that know me well and know that I am ridiculously interested in social media and online marketing, the fact I’d want to chart the activities of a ‘test group’ (in this case the 380 people that had liked our page by Sunday eve), isn’t entirely random. Will I be releasing all of the stats on everything we do on this project from start to finish so that you too can learn from our wins and mistakes? You betcha! I’ll do it all in one hit once we get the series up!

Why do I want to share all this stuff with you? Because this industry is hard! Making films and videos requires many hands and many hearts and it is imperative that we can be generous with one another about the process. The Australian industry relies on our generation forging forward as strongly as those before us. Now we have online to play with, a terrain that isn’t  as commonly explored in Australia, we really need to share our experiences so that we can catch up – fast!

Make sure you check out the link once it goes public Sunday eve – Just go to www.facebook.com/deadhearttv

How Deadheart began?

How it all started?

Well, like most things in my life, Deadheart came about via a complicated path.

A Director/Producer friend of mine, Luke Eve suggested I write a Web Series. I had had this funny little idea about the complexities a zombie chick would go through upon meeting her vampire boyfriend’s family. It was a comedy concept and one I had imagined mucking about with two filmmaker/comedy writer/ friends – Candice Storey and Andy Carbone. You may know these guys for their work on the Tropfest short – ‘Bird Therapy’. They liked my bean of an idea and I threw it at Luke one morning over coffee at Deus Ex Machina.

I went away to write something that was to be purely comical and because of my crazy, dark imagination, the whole concept veered down a very different road and with each draft, the story lines got more and more menacing. My friends are pretty used to me saying “and then she dies”, so it wasn’t a total surprise that my imagination, who we can nickname ‘Kirsty’ (because let’s face it, Kirsty sounds like the angry version of Kristy) took over and decided Deadheart would be about hate and lust.

I like to write to music and for most of the process, The Tongue’s ‘Bad Education’ was my soundtrack. Along with some of Australia’s best Aussie Rock tracks, music from The Superjesus to Goanna, Mondo Rock to Silverchair. It was an interesting playlist that spanned the last few decades of Aussie music.

I went into meet the lovely people at Fuel VFX last year and naturally they suggested I make a teaser so they could understand what the Hell I was talking about. We work in a visual medium and seeing something over hearing it is always preferable.

What is the point of this Series?

To be perfectly honest, I want to be creative, who doesn’t? I want to create stories and try achieving goals that I feel are out of my reach (a web series is a pretty big undertaking). I want to work with people I trust and respect and above all love. I want to see actors that I believe in, that deserve to be on your televisions each night of the week, given an opportunity to do what they love. I want to create a world that doesn’t exist, that’s new, that is slightly twisted and that entertains you.

I really want to bring Deadheart to life and am happy to hear from each of you reading this, the best ways to do that. I am entirely aware that I don’t have the answers to a great majority of things but some of you do. I hope to learn from our Deadheart supporters, talent and crew throughout this entire project and I am always open to be contacted, whether it be via our Deadheart page – http://www.facebook.com/deadhearttv or via my email hello@seraphicfilms.com

Hope that answers some more of your possible questions about me, Deadheart and this whole crazy project!

Speak soon.

Oh and by the way #teamvamp or #teamzombie?? Whose side are you on?

The Tongue – Bad Education – LIVE

The slow moving zombie wins the race

It has been 6 months since we shot the Deadheart Teaser and I’m sure you’re all wondering what the Hell is going on?! Actually, you probably just forgot all about my crazy web project…. Forget no more! Things are ramping up and we will have bits and pieces to share with you over the next few months.

I really want to share the process with you, because let’s face it, doing a web series is not the easiest medium to crack and it’s definitely not a form of entertainment that Australians are immersed in as much as the Americans. There’s a lot to learn and plenty of mistakes to be made.

I’ve made one short, yep, just one, if you Google ‘Something Fishy’ and my name (Kristy Best), you’ll come across videos that chart the course of that project, a fundraising campaign and a Blog. It was during this period I really got amongst Social Media and fell in love with the possibilities the web held for unknown beginners like myself. I also got to experience crowdfunding and the amazing geneorsity of friends and family.

Making a film or completing any project usually requires a lot of blood, sweat and tears and I’m happy to cry, laugh and bleed for your amusement, if it means that you benefit from this journey too. If you’re reading this, you’re a colleague, a friend, a loved one and if seeing me bash my head against a wall inspires you or entertains you in some way – my job is done.

A little fact you may not know about Deadheart is that each episode is based on a song. These tracks have not all been confirmed but one band that has said yes and have agreed to feature in 2 eps and the Behind the scenes video of the Teaser is SHINOBI.

SHINOBI is a band lead by my friend Eric Grothe Jnr, yes, you may recognise his name if you’re a Rugby League fan but Eric is also a talented musician with an extremely giving heart – hence allowing me to feature his music in Deadheart.

One of their older tracks, ‘Trouble’ is posted below.

SHINOBI just released their first single off their new album – look that up too – Against The Brave.

I’ll be blogging  more frequently and introducing you to the team and to the process and history involved in the Series so far.

Thanks for reading folks and if you have any questions post them on the http://www.facebook.com/deadhearttv page and I will reply as soon as I can!

SHINOBI – Trouble

That’s a wrap!

December 1st was shoot day!

The day began in a warehouse space in the heart of the City. This was our sacrificial lair. The place in which our lead zombie girl finds herself in serious danger.

This was the beginning of the setup – 180 candles all up by the time they were all placed.

A mobile phone picture really doesn’t do the setup justice. By the time it was done, there was a beautiful vibe to it that had all the single girls in the crew pining for a romantic guy that would lead them blindfolded into a space like this…..ahhhhh.

This is Stephanie Gunn, who plays our lead zombie ‘Mona’.

You can’t really see from this pic how crazy her coloured contacts were but we will definitely have better photos and footage to share with you of that by the end of this week! That’s the lovely Alexis Lynch doing her Make-up led by the amazing Cathy Geeves in the background there. Last but not least our 3rd Make-up Artist on the shoot was Zebblin Tilden!

Here’s a pic of vfx supervisor Antonny Sugianto taking some pics of Steph for one of our Special Effects shots.

Our Second location was a Carpark and an opportunity for all of us to meet some vampire boys….Their contacts were entirely different to that of the zombies. Check out the crazy fluro green eyes Benn Welford who plays ‘Zane’ sports.

Our fist setup was the Vampire boys in their Audi S5 borrowed fromthe lovely Toby.

In shot is PJ Lane as ‘Ky’, Tom Webb sitting in the passenger seat as ‘Brando’, my awesome 1st AD Autumn Loveday in the spotty skirt and DP extraordinaire Matt Horrex ACS behind the Red. I’m pretty sure hidden, on thoe other side of Matt is our 1st AC who saved the day by being able to help us out – Luke Symes!

As for the zombies? Well, they were hanging out in the carpark too – with their truck. Isn’t it awesome?! Again, the boys at Gasolina Scooters helping us out with the truck and the bikes all thanks to the connections of Vehicles Co-ordinator Matt Worth. We got lucky…..In this shot Andrew Steel, Priscilla Bonnet, Paul-William Mawhinney, Renato Fabretti, Rae Johnston (all main cast) and some of our sexy zombie extras….:)

All the zombie boys were dressed by ASTRAL PLANE a big thank you to those boys too!

All of the mobile phone pics wee taken by the best Work Experience kid to walk the planet – Millie Balken, who worked the set with the skill of confidence of a Production Assistant and spent her entire week helping get this project up!

Crew that didn’t get a pic/mention in were – Nicky Bartos 2nd AC, Grip/Gaffer Massimo Luongo and his fab assistant Beachie! Data Wrangler Jeff Halliday and Runner Michelle Soto. Lucky Best for making all the fab food for the whole day. Amar Germani for hunting down the Herbal Cigarettes and bringing them by, David Stanley for doing B-roll! I can’t wait to see the behind-the-scenes film, Ant Pawley at Southern Cross Cameras for giving us an amazing deal, Kim Greenway for showing everyone my film and recruiting the awesome Autumn and Jeff and if I missed anyone else, I’m super sorry. We ended up having quite a large crew and including cast, a heap of people that were generous enough and passionate enough to invest their time in this Teaser. You’re all the best! So great to work with so many beautiful people all in one day and all on my Birthday!

Look out for updates and check out two pics that were also captured on mobile phone by Millie Balken of what we were all watching on the screen…..Just go to http://www.facebook.com/deadhearttv

A Shirtless ZOMBIE?

Andrew Steel will play Manson

Okay, so maybe Mr Andrew Steel is shirtless in this pic but isn’t quite a Zombie…..Yet. Got your attention though, huh?!

Playing the role of Manson, (no, not like Marilyn…Or Charles…) a spontaneous, sexed up zombie with a smile that has all the zombie girls ripping off their left arm to be with him – lets face it, Andrew isn’t playing a role all that far from who he is in real life…..Easy ladies! He’s taken! Both on and off the show but more about his onscreen girlfriend later.

Some of you may recognise Andrew as the super bronzed, shirtless guy, in the 2009 Tropfest Finalist film “Bargain”, playing opposite the very funny Rebel Wilson. Or most recently as “Benji” one of the River Boys on everyone’s favourite Beachside Soapie, “Home and Away”.

A 2010 graduate of NIDA, Andrew recently tread the boards with NIDA classmate Anthony Taufa, Guss Murray and Matt Zeremes in the Lee Lewis Directed, Alex Broun penned play – ‘10,000 Beers’ at Darlinghurst Theatre. A quick Google search can tell you how successful the run was, and it not only exhibited a stellar cast but gave audiences an opportunity to not only see Andrew shirtless but naked! Oh my! I can see some of you blushing on the other side of your computer screens as you read on!

In all seriousness, Andrew is a multi-talented being. As comfortable on stage with a microphone and a guitar as he is in front of the cameras. Andrew is an all round performer and will get to use his musical talents in the Deadheart Series.

Don’t be a mothersucker…..do it 😉

Hello Boys…..

This is MR CARTER MR CARTER will be used to dress some of our HOT HOT HOT Actors for the Teaser Shoot. Want to know who is involved? Well, how about I let just ONE cat outta the bag…..

Let me introduce you to the leader of our Vampire pack – Ky Crimson, played by PJ Lane.

If you don’t look at PJ and think “Vampire” then you and I are obviously not very alike!

Some of you may recognise PJ from the Cleo Bachelor line up last year, others may have seen him on stage, on Neighbours, reporting on Sydney Weekender, or perhaps you knew him during his Basketball days!  That’s right! PJ played professionally overseas before returning home to embark upon a career in the Performing Arts.

Who is Ky? Ky is the Captain of the Basketball Team and the most priviledged Vamp to walk through the front doors of Deadheart High. Ky exhibits the kind of self-entitlement and sociopathy we could liken to that of Christain Bale’s character in American Psycho. Ky is the strategist behind any vengeful tactic to rid Deadheart of its zombie residents. He never intended upon sharing his School with such low-lives and he’s not about to let it continue. And in the Teaser he gets to drive this –

perfect fit I believe.

Stay tuned for more Casting mentions!
